Key Insight: When fโ€ฒf' is not too small, fโ€ฒโ€ฒf'' is not too big and x0x_0 starts near the root, each error is about a constant times the square of the last one, so the correct digits double. Without those conditions the method can converge to the wrong root, hit a horizontal tangent, or cycle.

IIWhy the Error Squares

At the root the tangent line sits En2E_n^2 below the curve, so the next error is En2/fโ€ฒ(xn)E_n^2 / f'(x_n).

๐Ÿ’ก For f(x)=x2โˆ’5f(x) = x^2 - 5, 12fโ€ฒโ€ฒ=1\tfrac{1}{2}f'' = 1, so the gap is exactly En2E_n^2; for a general ff it is about 12โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃEn2\tfrac{1}{2}\lvert f'' \rvert E_n^2, which gives C=โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃ2โˆฃfโ€ฒโˆฃC = \dfrac{\lvert f'' \rvert}{2\lvert f' \rvert}.

IIICorrect Digits Double

For 5\sqrt{5}, En+1=En2/(2xn)E_{n+1} = E_n^2/(2x_n) exactly, so the number of correct digits roughly doubles each step.

IVThree Ways to Fail

The same rule can converge to the other root, meet a horizontal tangent, or cycle forever.

๐Ÿ’ก Challenge: find the one start on x2โˆ’5x^2 - 5 that has no x1x_1, then a start on x3โˆ’5xx^3 - 5x that returns to itself after two steps.

VQuiz Questions

Problem 1 ยท Squaring the Error

Given: Near a root, an iteration's errors obey En+1โ‰ˆEn2E_{n+1} \approx E_n^2 (constant C=1C = 1), and E2=10โˆ’3E_2 = 10^{-3}. Find the approximate size of E4E_4.

โœ… Correct! Two squarings: 10โˆ’3โ†’10โˆ’6โ†’10โˆ’1210^{-3} \to 10^{-6} \to 10^{-12}. The correct digits go 3โ†’6โ†’123 \to 6 \to 12.
โŒ That is E3E_3. From E2E_2 to E4E_4 is two steps, so the error is squared twice.
โŒ The digits do not grow by a fixed amount. Adding one digit per step gives 10โˆ’410^{-4}, then 10โˆ’510^{-5}; but squaring doubles the exponent: (10โˆ’3)2=10โˆ’6(10^{-3})^2 = 10^{-6}, then 10โˆ’1210^{-12}.
โŒ One squaring too many. 10โˆ’2410^{-24} is E5E_5; from E2E_2 to E4E_4 there are only two steps.
Show solution

Each step squares the error:

E3โ‰ˆE22=(10โˆ’3)2=10โˆ’6,E4โ‰ˆE32=(10โˆ’6)2=10โˆ’12.E_3 \approx E_2^2 = (10^{-3})^2 = 10^{-6}, \qquad E_4 \approx E_3^2 = (10^{-6})^2 = 10^{-12}.

So E4โ‰ˆ10โˆ’12E_4 \approx 10^{-12}: about 1212 correct decimal places, double the 66 of x3x_3 and four times the 33 of x2x_2.

Problem 2 ยท Which Root?

Given: Newton's method on f(x)=x2โˆ’5f(x) = x^2 - 5, started at x0=โˆ’3x_0 = -3. Find x1x_1 and the limit of the guesses.

What is x1x_1?

Where do the guesses converge?

โœ… Correct! x1=โˆ’73โ‰ˆโˆ’2.333x_1 = -\tfrac{7}{3} \approx -2.333, and the guesses close in on โˆ’5โ‰ˆโˆ’2.236-\sqrt{5} \approx -2.236. The method only knows where you started.
โŒ Check the sign of fโ€ฒ(โˆ’3)f'(-3). fโ€ฒ(x)=2xf'(x) = 2x, so fโ€ฒ(โˆ’3)=โˆ’6f'(-3) = -6, not 66: x1=โˆ’3โˆ’4โˆ’6=โˆ’3+23x_1 = -3 - \frac{4}{-6} = -3 + \frac{2}{3}.
โŒ A negative start cannot jump to the positive side here. x1=12x0+52x0x_1 = \tfrac{1}{2}x_0 + \tfrac{5}{2x_0} is negative whenever x0x_0 is.
โŒ The fraction is upside down. The step subtracts f(x0)fโ€ฒ(x0)=4โˆ’6\frac{f(x_0)}{f'(x_0)} = \frac{4}{-6}, not fโ€ฒ(x0)f(x0)\frac{f'(x_0)}{f(x_0)}.
โŒ That is the root you might want, not the one you get. Every negative start for x2โˆ’5x^2 - 5 stays negative and leads to โˆ’5-\sqrt{5}.
โŒ No cycle here. x1=โˆ’73x_1 = -\tfrac{7}{3}, x2=โˆ’4721โ‰ˆโˆ’2.238x_2 = -\tfrac{47}{21} \approx -2.238: the guesses settle down, very fast.
โŒ 00 is not a root. f(0)=โˆ’5f(0) = -5; the vertex is where the tangent is horizontal, the start with no x1x_1.
โŒ Check x1x_1. Use x1=x0โˆ’f(x0)fโ€ฒ(x0)x_1 = x_0 - \frac{f(x_0)}{f'(x_0)} with f(โˆ’3)=4f(-3) = 4 and fโ€ฒ(โˆ’3)=โˆ’6f'(-3) = -6.
โŒ Check the limit. Follow the sign of the guesses and which root lies on that side.
Show solution

Here f(โˆ’3)=9โˆ’5=4f(-3) = 9 - 5 = 4 and fโ€ฒ(x)=2xf'(x) = 2x, so fโ€ฒ(โˆ’3)=โˆ’6f'(-3) = -6:

x1=โˆ’3โˆ’4โˆ’6=โˆ’3+23=โˆ’73โ‰ˆโˆ’2.333.x_1 = -3 - \frac{4}{-6} = -3 + \frac{2}{3} = -\frac{7}{3} \approx -2.333.

The next step gives x2=12(โˆ’73)+52(โˆ’7/3)=โˆ’76โˆ’1514=โˆ’4721โ‰ˆโˆ’2.2381x_2 = \tfrac{1}{2}\big(-\tfrac{7}{3}\big) + \dfrac{5}{2(-7/3)} = -\tfrac{7}{6} - \tfrac{15}{14} = -\tfrac{47}{21} \approx -2.2381, then x3โ‰ˆโˆ’2.2360689x_3 \approx -2.2360689.

The guesses converge to โˆ’5โ‰ˆโˆ’2.2360680-\sqrt{5} \approx -2.2360680. Newton's method found a root, just not the positive one: which root it finds is decided by the start.

Problem 3 ยท The Constant for a Cube Root

Given: Newton's method on f(x)=x3โˆ’2f(x) = x^3 - 2, whose root is x=23โ‰ˆ1.26x = \sqrt[3]{2} \approx 1.26. At some step En=10โˆ’3E_n = 10^{-3}. Estimate En+1E_{n+1} with En+1โ‰ˆโˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃ2โˆฃfโ€ฒโˆฃEn2E_{n+1} \approx \dfrac{\lvert f'' \rvert}{2\lvert f' \rvert}E_n^2 at the root.

โœ… Correct! C=6x2โ‹…3x2=1x=123โ‰ˆ0.794C = \frac{6x}{2 \cdot 3x^2} = \frac{1}{x} = \frac{1}{\sqrt[3]{2}} \approx 0.794, so En+1โ‰ˆ0.794ร—10โˆ’6E_{n+1} \approx 0.794 \times 10^{-6}. An actual step from 23+10โˆ’3\sqrt[3]{2} + 10^{-3} gives 7.93ร—10โˆ’77.93 \times 10^{-7}.
โŒ That sets C=1C = 1. The ladder with C=1C = 1 is an idealisation; here C=โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃ2โˆฃfโ€ฒโˆฃC = \frac{\lvert f'' \rvert}{2\lvert f' \rvert} must be computed.
โŒ The 12\tfrac{1}{2} is missing. The gap is 12โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃEn2\tfrac{1}{2}\lvert f'' \rvert E_n^2 (quadratic approximation), so C=โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃ2โˆฃfโ€ฒโˆฃC = \frac{\lvert f'' \rvert}{2\lvert f' \rvert}, not โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃโˆฃfโ€ฒโˆฃ\frac{\lvert f'' \rvert}{\lvert f' \rvert}.
โŒ The constant is upside down. fโ€ฒf' is in the denominator: a steep tangent shrinks the next error. C=6x6x2=1xC = \frac{6x}{6x^2} = \frac{1}{x}, not xx.
Show solution

Derivatives: fโ€ฒ(x)=3x2f'(x) = 3x^2 and fโ€ฒโ€ฒ(x)=6xf''(x) = 6x. At the root x=23x = \sqrt[3]{2}:

C=โˆฃfโ€ฒโ€ฒโˆฃ2โˆฃfโ€ฒโˆฃ=6x2โ‹…3x2=1x=123โ‰ˆ0.794.C = \frac{\lvert f'' \rvert}{2\lvert f' \rvert} = \frac{6x}{2 \cdot 3x^2} = \frac{1}{x} = \frac{1}{\sqrt[3]{2}} \approx 0.794.

Then

En+1โ‰ˆ0.794ร—(10โˆ’3)2=7.94ร—10โˆ’7โ‰ˆ7.9ร—10โˆ’7.E_{n+1} \approx 0.794 \times (10^{-3})^2 = 7.94 \times 10^{-7} \approx 7.9 \times 10^{-7}.

Check: one Newton step from xn=23+10โˆ’3x_n = \sqrt[3]{2} + 10^{-3} lands 7.93ร—10โˆ’77.93 \times 10^{-7} above the root. The digits still double (about 33 to about 66); CC only shifts them slightly.

Problem 4 ยท A New Wiggly Curve

Given: Newton's method on f(x)=x3โˆ’2x+2f(x) = x^3 - 2x + 2, started at x0=0x_0 = 0. What happens to the guesses?

โœ… Correct! x1=0โˆ’2โˆ’2=1x_1 = 0 - \frac{2}{-2} = 1 and x2=1โˆ’11=0x_2 = 1 - \frac{1}{1} = 0: back to the start, a cycle like ยฑ1\pm 1 on x3โˆ’5xx^3 - 5x.
โŒ Compute the first two steps. x1=1x_1 = 1 and x2=0x_2 = 0 return to the start, so the guesses never approach โˆ’1.77-1.77.
โŒ Check fโ€ฒ(0)f'(0). fโ€ฒ(x)=3x2โˆ’2f'(x) = 3x^2 - 2, so fโ€ฒ(0)=โˆ’2โ‰ 0f'(0) = -2 \neq 0; the tangent at x0x_0 is not horizontal.
โŒ 11 is not a root. f(1)=1โˆ’2+2=1โ‰ 0f(1) = 1 - 2 + 2 = 1 \neq 0, so the method takes another step, back to 00.
Show solution

Here fโ€ฒ(x)=3x2โˆ’2f'(x) = 3x^2 - 2.

Step 1: f(0)=2f(0) = 2, fโ€ฒ(0)=โˆ’2f'(0) = -2, so x1=0โˆ’2โˆ’2=1x_1 = 0 - \dfrac{2}{-2} = 1.

Step 2: f(1)=1f(1) = 1, fโ€ฒ(1)=1f'(1) = 1, so x2=1โˆ’11=0x_2 = 1 - \dfrac{1}{1} = 0.

x2=x0x_2 = x_0, so every later step repeats: 0โ†’1โ†’0โ†’1โ†’โ‹ฏ0 \to 1 \to 0 \to 1 \to \cdots. The guesses never settle on the only real root, xโ‰ˆโˆ’1.769x \approx -1.769. This is the cycle failure; it needs a curve that wiggles, as x3โˆ’5xx^3 - 5x does in the video.
