Key Insight: For x0x^0, x1x^1, x2x^2 the area from 00 to bb is b11\frac{b^{1}}{1}, b22\frac{b^{2}}{2}, b33\frac{b^{3}}{3}: raise the power by one and divide by the new exponent. The pattern predicts โˆซ0bx3โ€‰dx=b44\int_0^b x^3\,dx = \frac{b^4}{4}, which the next lecture proves.

IIReading a Sigma Sum

Sigma packs a whole sum into one formula in the index ii, evaluated at i=1,2,โ€ฆ,ni = 1, 2, \ldots, n and added.

๐Ÿ’ก The ratio 1nk+1โˆ‘i=1nik\frac{1}{n^{k+1}}\sum_{i=1}^{n} i^k is exactly what a rectangle sum for xkx^k on [0,1][0, 1] computes, so its limit 1k+1\frac{1}{k+1} is the area pattern in disguise.

IIIRectangles Under 1, x and xยฒ

Right-endpoint rectangle sums on [0,b][0, b] close in on bb, b22\tfrac{b^2}{2} and b33\tfrac{b^3}{3} as nn grows.

f(x) = xยฒ โ€” the staircase pyramid
โˆ‘i=1nbn(ibn)2=b3n3โˆ‘i=1ni2\sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{b}{n}\left(\frac{ib}{n}\right)^2 = \frac{b^3}{n^3}\sum_{i=1}^{n} i^2
1n3โˆ‘i=1ni2โ†’13โŸนโˆซ0bx2โ€‰dx=b33\frac{1}{n^3}\sum_{i=1}^{n} i^2 \to \frac13 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad \int_0^b x^2\,dx = \frac{b^3}{3}

Sigma only abbreviates: โˆ‘i2\sum i^2 still had to be trapped by the staircase pyramid.

IVExtending the Pattern to xยณ

Three cases suggest a rule; the rule's prediction for x3x^3 can be tested against rectangle sums.

x2x^2b33\dfrac{b^3}{3}
x3x^3guess

๐Ÿ’ก A guess that fits three cases is not yet a theorem: the next lecture proves โˆซ0bx3โ€‰dx=b44\int_0^b x^3\,dx = \frac{b^4}{4} by connecting areas to derivatives.

VQuiz Questions

Problem 1 ยท Expand a Sigma Sum

Evaluate โˆ‘i=14(i2+1)\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{4} \left(i^2 + 1\right).

โœ… Correct! Each of the four terms carries its own +1+1: 2+5+10+17=342 + 5 + 10 + 17 = 34.
โŒ Close, butโ€ฆ the summand is i2+1i^2 + 1, so the +1+1 appears in every term โ€” four times, not once.
โŒ Not quite. The index starts at the value under the sigma, i=1i = 1, not i=0i = 0; it runs 1,2,3,41, 2, 3, 4.
โŒ Not quite. 3030 is โˆ‘i=14i2\sum_{i=1}^{4} i^2 alone; the +1+1 in each term was dropped.
โŒ Not quite. Substitute i=1,2,3,4i = 1, 2, 3, 4 into i2+1i^2 + 1 and add.
Show solution

The index runs from 11 to 44; substitute each value into the summand i2+1i^2 + 1:

โˆ‘i=14(i2+1)=(1+1)+(4+1)+(9+1)+(16+1)=2+5+10+17=34.\sum_{i=1}^{4}\left(i^2 + 1\right) = (1 + 1) + (4 + 1) + (9 + 1) + (16 + 1) = 2 + 5 + 10 + 17 = 34.

Equivalently, โˆ‘i=14i2+โˆ‘i=141=30+4=34\sum_{i=1}^{4} i^2 + \sum_{i=1}^{4} 1 = 30 + 4 = 34: summing the constant 11 four times gives 44.

Problem 2 ยท Rectangles Under a Constant

Given: f(x)=1f(x) = 1 on [0,3][0, 3], cut into n=6n = 6 equal pieces. Find the right-endpoint rectangle sum โˆ‘i=1636โ‹…1\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{6} \frac{3}{6}\cdot 1.

โœ… Correct! Six rectangles of width 12\tfrac12 and height 11 give 33 โ€” exactly โˆซ031โ€‰dx=3\int_0^3 1\,dx = 3, for any nn.
โŒ Close, butโ€ฆ 12\tfrac12 is one term. A summand with no ii in it is still added once for every index value: n=6n = 6 times.
โŒ Not quite. 66 counts the rectangles; each one has area 36โ‹…1=12\tfrac36 \cdot 1 = \tfrac12, not 11.
โŒ Not quite. 212=โˆ‘i=1636โ‹…i\tfrac{21}{2} = \sum_{i=1}^{6} \tfrac36 \cdot i replaces the height 11 with the index ii. Here the summand has no ii in it: every height is 11.
โŒ Not quite. Add the term 36โ‹…1\tfrac36 \cdot 1 once for each i=1,โ€ฆ,6i = 1, \ldots, 6.
Show solution

The summand 36โ‹…1=12\frac{3}{6}\cdot 1 = \frac12 does not depend on ii, so the sum adds 12\frac12 six times:

โˆ‘i=1636โ‹…1=6โ‹…12=3.\sum_{i=1}^{6}\frac{3}{6}\cdot 1 = 6 \cdot \frac12 = 3.

In general โˆ‘i=1nbnโ‹…1=bnโ‹…n=b\sum_{i=1}^{n}\frac{b}{n}\cdot 1 = \frac{b}{n}\cdot n = b, which is the area โˆซ0b1โ€‰dx=b\int_0^b 1\,dx = b of the rectangle with base bb and height 11 โ€” the length of the interval.

Problem 3 ยท A Coarse Sum for xยฒ

Given: f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 on [0,3][0, 3] with n=3n = 3 right-endpoint rectangles, so the sum is b3n3โˆ‘i=13i2\dfrac{b^3}{n^3}\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^{3} i^2 with b=3b = 3. Find the rectangle sum and the exact area.

What is the rectangle sum?

What is the exact area โˆซ03x2โ€‰dx\int_0^3 x^2\,dx?

โœ… Correct! The staircase overshoots: 14>914 > 9, and the excess shrinks to 00 as nโ†’โˆžn \to \infty.
โŒ Not quite. 0+1+4=50 + 1 + 4 = 5 uses left endpoints. The rectangle heights here come from the right ends x=1,2,3x = 1, 2, 3.
โŒ Not quite. 99 is the exact area under the curve. Three right-endpoint rectangles stand above an increasing curve, so their sum is larger.
โŒ Check the sum. With b=n=3b = n = 3 the factor b3n3\frac{b^3}{n^3} is 11, so the sum is just 12+22+321^2 + 2^2 + 3^2.
โŒ Not quite. 27=b327 = b^3; the area under x2x^2 is b33\frac{b^3}{3} โ€” divide by the new exponent.
โŒ Not quite. 92=b22\frac92 = \frac{b^2}{2} is the area under y=xy = x, the triangle.
โŒ Check the area. Use โˆซ0bx2โ€‰dx=b33\int_0^b x^2\,dx = \frac{b^3}{3}; the rectangle sum is only an approximation of it.
Show solution

Each piece has width bn=1\frac{b}{n} = 1 and right endpoint x=ibn=ix = \frac{ib}{n} = i, so rectangle ii has area 1โ‹…i21 \cdot i^2:

3333โˆ‘i=13i2=12+22+32=1+4+9=14.\frac{3^3}{3^3}\sum_{i=1}^{3} i^2 = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 = 1 + 4 + 9 = 14.

The exact area is

โˆซ03x2โ€‰dx=333=9.\int_0^3 x^2\,dx = \frac{3^3}{3} = 9.

Right-endpoint rectangles sit above an increasing curve, so 1414 overshoots 99 by 55; refining nn drives the sum down to 99.

Problem 4 ยท Archimedes' Region

Given: the chord y=2xy = 2x and the parabola y=x2y = x^2 meet at x=0x = 0 and x=2x = 2, and the chord lies above the parabola between them. Find the area of the region between them.

โœ… Correct! Triangle minus parabola area: 4โˆ’83=434 - \tfrac83 = \tfrac43 โ€” Archimedes' answer, with no long geometric argument.
โŒ Not quite. 83\tfrac83 is the area under the parabola alone; the region lies between the chord and the parabola.
โŒ Not quite. 44 is the area of the triangle under the chord; the part under the parabola must be removed.
โŒ Close, butโ€ฆ 8โˆ’83=1638 - \tfrac83 = \tfrac{16}{3} forgets the 12\tfrac12 in the triangle's area: under the chord the area is 12โ‹…2โ‹…4=4\tfrac12 \cdot 2 \cdot 4 = 4, not 88.
โŒ Not quite. Subtract the area under the parabola from the area under the chord.
Show solution

Under the chord y=2xy = 2x from 00 to 22 is a triangle with base 22 and height 2โ‹…2=42 \cdot 2 = 4:

12โ‹…2โ‹…4=4.\tfrac12 \cdot 2 \cdot 4 = 4.

Under the parabola, by the pattern with b=2b = 2:

โˆซ02x2โ€‰dx=233=83.\int_0^2 x^2\,dx = \frac{2^3}{3} = \frac83.

The region between them is the triangle with the parabola's area removed:

4โˆ’83=43.4 - \frac83 = \frac43.
