1. The definite integral $\int_a^b f(x)\,dx$ as area
  Write the notation, name the limits $\int_a^b f(x)\,dx$ and $b$ , and state the region it measures: above the $x$ -axis, below $y = f(x)$ , over $[a, b]$ .
2. The three-step procedure
  List the steps (divide into rectangles, add their areas, take the limit as they get thin), and sketch a staircase showing where rectangles overshoot and fall short of the curve.
3. Rectangle sum for $x^2$ on $[0, b]$
  With $n$ right-endpoint rectangles of base $\frac{b}{n}$ , tabulate the heights $\left(\frac{ib}{n}\right)^2$ , write the full sum, and factor it into $\frac{b^3}{n^3}(1^2 + 2^2 + \cdots + n^2)$ .
