まとめノート

    1. 1

Sign rules for f′f'f′ and f′′f''f′′

Write the four rules: f′>0f'>0f′>0 increasing, f′<0f'<0f′<0 decreasing, f′′>0f''>0f′′>0 concave up, f′′<0f''<0f′′<0 concave down, illustrate concave up with a slope going from −4-4−4 to −3-3−3, and record that precalculus common sense comes first.

    2. 2

      Critical point and critical value

Define a critical point x0x_0x0 by f′(x0)=0f'(x_0)=0f′(x0)=0 and its critical value y0=f(x0)y_0=f(x_0)y0=f(x0), and record two distinctions: the graph need not turn at a critical point, and corners do not count.

    3. 3

Worked example f(x)=3x−x3f(x)=3x-x^3f(x)=3x−x3 from f′f'f′ alone

Factor f′(x)=3(1−x)(1+x)f'(x)=3(1-x)(1+x)f′(x)=3(1−x)(1+x), find its sign on x<−1x<-1x<−1, −1<x<1-1<x<1−1<x<1 and x>1x>1x>1, compute f(1)=2f(1)=2f(1)=2 and f(−1)=−2f(-1)=-2f(−1)=−2, and sketch the down-up-down shape with its valley and hilltop.
