まとめノート

    1. 1

Sign of f′f'f′ and increasing, decreasing or constant

Rewrite the MVT as f(b)=f(a)+f′(c)(b−a)f(b)=f(a)+f'(c)(b-a)f(b)=f(a)+f′(c)(b−a) with a<ba<ba<b, and prove from it the three facts for f′>0f'>0f′>0, f′<0f'<0f′<0 and f′=0f'=0f′=0.

    2. 2

      The MVT versus linear approximation

      Contrast ΔfΔx≈f′(a)\frac{\Delta f}{\Delta x}\approx f'(a)ΔxΔf≈f′(a) with the exact MVT equation, and write the bound min⁡f′≤f(b)−f(a)b−a≤max⁡f′\min f'\le\frac{f(b)-f(a)}{b-a}\le\max f'minf′≤b−af(b)−f(a)≤maxf′ over a≤x≤ba\le x\le ba≤x≤b as a statement about speeds.

    3. 3

      Proving ex>1+xe^x>1+xex>1+x for x>0x>0x>0

Write out the proof with f(x)=ex−(1+x)f(x)=e^x-(1+x)f(x)=ex−(1+x): its value at 000, its derivative, the sign of that derivative, and the conclusion.

    4. 4

      Iterating to ex>1+x+x22e^x>1+x+\frac{x^2}{2}ex>1+x+2x2 and beyond

Prove the second inequality with g(x)=ex−(1+x+x22)g(x)=e^x-(1+x+\frac{x^2}{2})g(x)=ex−(1+x+2x2), using the first inequality for g′g'g′, then write the next polynomial bound and the limiting series for exe^xex.
