Doing nothing as a daily portfolio decision
Record that leaving a portfolio untouched is itself an investment decision, and state the aim of portfolio theory as making that daily decision systematically.
Portfolio weights
Write the weight definition with the constraint , then convert the $100,000 account of stocks A, B and C into weights of 10%, 60% and 30%.
Negative weights from short sales
State that may be zero or negative, show that a negative weight forces the positive weights to sum above one, and record a short sale as borrowing that funds another purchase.
Buying on margin as a short bond position
Rebuild the table with $50,000 left in the account: stocks at 20%, 120% and 60%, the riskless bond at −100%, and check the weights still total 100%.
